IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Geraldine
Winkles
July 10, 1936 – January 22, 2026
Geraldine Winkles, of Harvest, Alabama, passed away peacefully at her son's home in Ozark, Alabama, on January 22, 2026.
She was born in Madison County, Alabama, on July 10, 1936, to Howard Wheeler Campbell and Emma Sue Campbell.
Geraldine was one of six children: three brothers—Orville, Buddy, and Morris—and two sisters, Catherine and Joan.
Geraldine grew into a true Southern belle. At the age of 16, she married David Russell Winkles, who was 19 at the time. Together, they moved from Huntsville, Alabama, to Chicago to begin their life as a young married couple. Geraldine and David were blessed with five children: Jeanette Sue, Sandra Diane, Sharon Kay, David Wayne, and Lisa Gayle. She was further blessed with nine grandchildren: Bryan Alan (and great-grandson Ryan, who serves in the U.S. Air Force) and Crystal Ann (children of Jeanette); Phillip Glen (son of Sandra); Jamie (son of Sharon); Steven Ross, Nicole Kathleen, Megan Elizabeth, and David Brent (children of David Wayne); and Michelle (daughter of Lisa).
Geraldine was a devoted housewife and a true role model, dedicating her life to her family and children. As a stay-at-home mother, her world revolved around her husband and kids. Many cousins gathered daily to enjoy her homemade lunches and dinners. She treated all nieces and nephews as her own and loved them equally. Family was everything to Geraldine, and she cherished every moment spent together—especially during the holidays.
In 1999, after living in Chicago for 50 years, Geraldine and David decided to retire and return to the Huntsville area, purchasing their home in Harvest, Alabama. She never lost her Southern accent and remained the true Southern belle she had always been. Four months ago, Geraldine was transported by ambulance to her son's home in Ozark, where hospice care was arranged. Due to her need for 24-hour care, her son ensured she could receive the attention and comfort she needed in his home. A special thank you is extended to Kim Schnizlein for making Geraldine's final days as comfortable as possible. Kim did an amazing job, providing constant care day and night and ensuring Geraldine's comfort. Rest in peace, my dear mother. You are loved and will be greatly missed. You made our lives so much fun growing up on the north side of Chicago, just blocks from Wrigley Field.
Written by her son,
David Wayne Winkles
